Alexandrite was named after it was discovered in 1830 on the 12th birthday of the Crown Prince of Russia (later Alexander II). Alexandrite is produced in the Ural mine along with emeralds and other minerals. Under the sunlight it seems to be green stones, turn into amethyst-like magenta under an incandescent light bulb. The color of alexandrite is due to the chromium, which absorbs yellow as well as emerald and ruby. Alexandrite has equal amounts of red and green, and looks green in a well-balanced light like the sun, and looks purplish red in an incandescent light bulb with a lot of red components.
Therefore, it was a gem of special value as an amulet for Russians, whose military uniform was red and green. However, under normal sunlight, it has a rather dull green rather than a beautiful green like an emerald, and it is inferior to other gems in terms of brightness. The red that changes and appears is not close to a pure color like ruby, but closer to purple. Alexandrite is not valued for its beauty in nature, but for its remarkableness and rarity of its color change. Of course, basic conditions such as good shape and few scratches are important. Alexandrite is a mineral called chrysoberyl, and although it may be hard to imagine, it is the same mineral as cat's eye.
